East African Portland Cement PLC Resumes Operations After Major Overhaul

On May 8, 2024, East African Portland Cement PLC resumed operations following a month-long renovations and plant maintenance at an approximate cost of KES. 500 billion. This milestone comes as we aim to enhance our capacity to meet the growing regional demand for cement amid an ongoing infrastructure boom.

The upgraded plant is expected to increase our annual production capacity to over one million tonnes, solidifying our position as a leading regional cement provider. Acting Managing Director Mohammed Osman emphasized that the refurbishment will improve efficiency and significantly reduce spillage, leading to a better work environment and less waste.

The Guest of Honour at the recommissioning ceremony, former Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade and Industry Ms. Rebecca Miano, highlighted that this development represents a transformative moment for Kenya’s manufacturing sector, a crucial engine for economic growth, job creation, and industrialization. C.S. Miano noted that the introduction of a 17.5% Export and Investment Promotion Levy on imported clinker is aimed at reducing local cement companies’ reliance on imported raw materials and promoting domestic industries.

Brigadier (Rtd) Richard Mbithi, Chairman of the EAPC PLC Board, expressed confidence in the company’s ability to meet production and revenue targets following the plant refurbishment. “With the completion of the plant upgrades and the resulting improvements in production and efficiency, we are optimistic about achieving our goals, which will ultimately provide positive returns to our shareholders in the form of dividends,” he stated.

EAPC PLC’s focus on achieving and surpassing its targets underscores its crucial role in driving economic growth and prosperity in Kenya. The plant’s recommissioning signifies a significant advancement for the nation’s industrial landscape, demonstrating resilience and innovation while reinforcing Kenya’s leadership in the region’s manufacturing sector.

In line with its commitment to environmental sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility, EAPC PLC also initiated a tree planting campaign during the recommissioning event, recognizing the importance of environmental stewardship. This initiative showcases EAPC PLC’s proactive approach to minimizing its environmental impact and promoting a greener future for generations to come.
